MLB needs to push the trade deadline back The inclusion of the second wild card playoff spot has made July 31st too early to decide that your team is out of contention now.
I came to this realization when thinking about how the Yankees may look to move Aroldis Chapman or Andrew Miller by the trade deadline if the team is “out of contention” (waiver trades are a possibility after the trade deadline but still).
Think about it. Do you think the Yankees (or most teams) will know if/that they are out of contention by July 31st? I say too early.
