Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) – A goal in each half from Ethan Finlay propelled Columbus Crew SC to a 2-1 win over Red Bull New York at MAPFRE Stadium on Saturday.
Anatole Abang scored eight minutes into the match to put New York in front, but Finlay replied in the 33rd to level the contest before netting the winning tally in the 74th to help Columbus to its second win in nine games.
New York, meanwhile, had its two-game winning streak snapped and has lost five of its last seven outings.
Justin Meram threatened with a nice volley in the opening few minutes, but the visitors took the lead in the eighth when Bradley Wright-Phillips played a ball into space and Abang chased it down before driving it past goalkeeper Steve Clark and into the bottom corner of the net.
Crew SC got back on level terms in the 33rd when a flicked header from Kei Kamara was settled by Finlay, who cut back past a defender and curled a shot inside the far post.
Wright-Phillips nearly restored New York’s lead in the 67th with a left-footed volley that sailed just over the crossbar.
However, the hosts seized the lead in the 74th when Kamara nodded a ball down at the back post for Finlay, who provided the final touch at close range.
Clark needed to be alert six minutes from time to preserve the win as Lloyd Sam’s chip found the head of Wright-Phillips, who turned the ball on goal, forcing Clark into a nice reaction stop.
