A-Bombs: Yanks rally past Twins behind A-Rod’s three HRs

Minneapolis, MN ( – Alex Rodriguez homered three times and the New York Yankees used a four-run ninth inning to rally past the Minnesota Twins for an 8-5 victory in the second of a three-game set on Saturday.

Glen Perkins (0-2) took the mound in the ninth and was greeted by Rodriguez’s tying solo blast to center. Carlos Beltran reached on a fielder’s choice, Chase Headley singled and John Ryan Murphy completed the comeback with a three-run blast to right-center for an 8-5 game.

Andrew Miller nailed down his 23rd save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth.

“This was a great team win,” Rodriguez said. “I just wanted to get a good pitch to hit and put a swing on it.”

Adam Warren (6-5) earned the win after allowing just one hit over 2 1/3 innings of relief for the Yankees. who have won five of their last six games.

Torii Hunter hit a three-run homer and Aaron Hicks provided a two-run blast for the Twins.

Neither starter factored into the decision as CC Sabathia allowed five runs on six hits and three walks in 5 2/3 frames and Tommy Milone gave up four runs in six-plus innings of work.

The Twins wasted no time getting on the board as Brian Dozier led off the first with a single and trotted home on Hicks’ blast to left-center.

In the third, Hicks and Miguel Sano singled around a Trevor Plouffe strikeout and Hunter made it a 5-0 game by crushing a 1-1 sinker over the wall in right.

Rodriguez got a run back for the Yankees in the fourth with a towering solo shot to left.

New York got within a run during the seventh. Rodriguez followed Chris Young’s leadoff double with a two-run homer to center. Mark Teixeira doubled, moved to third on a line out and scored on Headley’s sacrifice fly for a 5-4 game.

Game Notes

Hunter moved into sole possession of sixth place on the Twins all-time home runs list with 208, passing Kirby Puckett … Rodriguez notched his fifth career three home run game and tied Hank Aaron for sixth all-time in multi- homer games with 62 … It was Perkins’ second blown save of the season.
