Tejada helps Mets edge Braves in 11 innings

(Monday, July 7)

Final Score: New York 4, Atlanta 3

Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Ruben Tejada’s RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted the New York Mets to a 4-3 win over the Atlanta Braves on Monday in the opener of a four-game series.

Juan Lagares scored on the hit up the middle after stroking a one-out double off Anthony Varvaro (3-2), who was pitching in his second inning.

Washington also lost to Baltimore in extra innings Monday, so Atlanta was able to keep its half-game lead in the NL East despite its second straight loss on the heels of a nine-game winning streak.

The Braves were outhitting the Mets 6-2 after seven innings but still trailed 2-0 until putting together a three-run rally in the eighth to take the lead.

Curtis Granderson then homered in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score for New York.

David Wright also homered for the Mets, who have won three of their last four games since being swept in Atlanta last week.

“We needed it bad because we had a very similar game down there in Atlanta that we lost,” New York manager Terry Collins said.

Mets starter Daisuke Matsuzaka gave up six hits and two walks in seven shutout innings — his longest outing of the year — and was in line for his first win in five starts before Atlanta rallied.

Atlanta’s Mike Minor allowed two hits in his seven innings but both resulted in runs as he remained winless since May 19.

The Mets successfully challenged a force play at second base in the ninth inning, arguing that Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons came off the bag as he caught a throw from third baseman Chris Johnson on Lagares’ bunt.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez was ejected after the call on the field was overturned but the Mets squandered the break, leaving the bases loaded.

Freddie Freeman hit a one-out double off Vic Black to spark Atlanta’s rally in the eighth inning, went to third on a groundout and scored on Josh Edgin’s wild pitch, which almost hit Jayson Heyward in the head.

Heyward singled and scored on Johnson’s double to the center field wall off Jenrry Mejia to tie the score at 2-2. Mejia intentionally walked Tommy La Stella and Johnson scored on Christian Bethancourt’s single to right.

Granderson’s two-out shot to right field in the bottom of the eighth came off Luis Avilan, who had relieved Minor and was his 13th homer of the season.

After David Murphy followed with a single, New York’s fourth hit of the game, Jordan Walden came in for Avilan and struck out Wright to end the inning.

Mejia stranded runners at first and second base in the top of the ninth when he got Justin Upton to fly out.

Earlier, Eric Campbell drew a leadoff walk in the second inning and scored on New York’s first hit of the game, Travis d’Arnaud’s double to the left-center field wall.

Wright’s two-out blast to left field in the third was his first home run at Citi Field since May 28. It was his seventh homer of the season.

Game Notes

Carlos Torres (4-4) pitched the last two innings for New York to earn the win … Freeman had three hits … The Mets had seven hits but no one player finished with more than one. They were 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight men on base … Atlanta went 1-for-11 with men in scoring position and left 11 on base.
