O’s rout Yankees, but lose Machado

(Monday, August 11)

Final Score: Baltimore 11, New York 3

Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) – The Orioles gained another game on the Yankees but lost Manny Machado.

Chris Davis hit a go-ahead home run and Jonathan Schoop and Nelson Cruz also homered as Baltimore beat New York 11-3 on Monday in the rainy opener of a three-game series.

Machado, the star third baseman, left the game after spraining his right knee on a broken-bat swing in the third inning. Machado went down in a heap at the plate after hitting the ground ball and had to be helped off the field.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Machado will have an MRI on Tuesday morning.

“It’s been a lot more positive that the way it looked,” Showalter said. “He seems to be in pretty good spirits considering. We’re hoping for good news tomorrow. There’s a chance we dodged a bullet.”

Davis, who had the night off, came in to play third and hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning that gave Baltimore the lead for good.

Schoop belted a three-run homer and Cruz added a two-run shot for the Orioles, who bounced back from a loss in Sunday’s series finale against St. Louis. They haven’t lost consecutive games since June 28 and 29, going 26-11 since then.

Bud Norris (10-7) picked up his third win in five starts despite giving up three runs on five hits and a walk in five innings.

Brett Gardner tripled and scored for the Yanks, who have lost three straight.

Chris Capuano (1-3) remained winless for the Yankees after yielding four runs on six hits in six innings. Capuano, who struck out seven, is 0-2 in four starts since being acquired from the Red Sox last month.

The AL East-leading Orioles are now seven games up on the third-place Yankees.

Davis’ 21st homer of the season sailed deep into the right-field seats to give Baltimore a 4-3 lead in the fifth. It came after he looked at three straight balls, then zeroed in on an 81 mph slider.

Nick Markakis doubled and scored on Adam Jones’ double in the seventh before Cruz launched his 31st homer of the season far into the seats in left-center to push Baltimore’s lead to 7-3. All three runs came against Adam Warren.

Andrew Miller came in to get the last out for Baltimore after Darren O’Day walked two batters in the eighth, and Schoop hit his 10th homer of the season in the bottom of the inning. David Lough added an RBI single to make it 11-3.

Gardner hit a leadoff triple over Jones’ head and scored on Derek Jeter’s slow grounder in the first inning for New York.

Machado doubled and scored in the bottom of the first and the Orioles took the lead on a loony series of plays in the second inning.

It started with a throw from catcher Caleb Joseph to second base that arrived so far ahead of Chase Headley, who was trying to steal, that he turned around and was caught in a rundown. Carlos Beltran broke for home in the commotion and was eventually struck in the helmet by Machado’s throw, which sent the ball caroming toward the Orioles dugout. Headley scored to make it 3-1 after Norris retrieved the ball and flipped it past Joseph.

Schoop went to second base on the ground ball Machado hit as he was injured and scored on Jones’ single to get the Orioles within 3-2.

Game Notes

Machado missed the last week of the 2013 season and wasn’t activated until May 1 this year after tearing a ligament in his left knee … Norris had five strikeouts … The Yankees announced that right-hander Michael Pineda will start Wednesday’s series finale after missing more than three months with a shoulder injury. Pineda was placed on the disabled list May 6 after his 10- game suspension for doctoring a baseball. Also Monday, the Yankees selected the contract of pitcher Chris Leroux from Scranton/Wilkes Barre and optioned fellow right-hander Bryan Mitchell to the Triple-A club.
