Horses work Saturday for Belmont Stakes

Elmont, NY ( – Several Belmont Stakes contenders, in addition to California Chrome, put in final workouts Saturday for next week’s 146th Belmont Stakes.

At Belmont Park, Peter Pan Stakes winner Tonalst and Social Inclusion posted works. Tonalist, trained by Christophe Clement, worked five furlongs in 1:00.11 and trainer Manny Azpurua’s Social Inclusion, third in the Preakness, worked three furlongs in 33.55 seconds and galloped out six furlongs in 1:09 4/5.

“We are excited about the work and excited about the horse,” said Clement. “I got him in a minute and am very happy about everything. He went in company with Life in Shambles and it was a good work.”

Social Inclusion will either start in the Belmont Stakes or the Woody Stephens Stakes earlier on the program.

“We weren’t expecting him to go that fast,” said owner Ronald Sanchez. “The horse was real good. The track was lightning fast, and that was the best gallop out he’s ever had. He showed them this morning how good he is feeling.”

At Aqueduct, Wood Memorial runner-up Samraat went a mile in 1:47.55

“It was very, very good,” said Samraat’s trainer, Rick Violette. “He went the last quarter in :24, which was just what we were looking for. He didn’t break any stop watches, but it was pretty cool.”

In Louisville, General a Rod, fourth in the Preakness, worked five furlongs in 1:00 1/5 at Churchill Downs’ Trackside training facility.

Over Churchill’s main track, Medal Count worked six furlongs in 1:10 3/5 with exercise rider Faustino Aguilar. The colt galloped out seven furlongs in 1:24 and a mile in 1:39.
