Ellsbury’s HR in 14th lifts Yanks past Tribe

(Wednesday, July 9)

Final Score: New York 5, Cleveland 4

Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) – Jacoby Ellsbury belted the go-ahead solo homer in the 14th inning to boost the New York Yankees to a 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians in the third edition of a four-game series.

Ellsbury, who came into the game mired in a 5-for-27 slump on this road trip, went 3-for-7 and scored twice Wednesday as New York moved to 5-2 on the 11- game trek.

Mark Teixeira hit a pair of homers off Cleveland starter Josh Tomlin and knocked in three runs as the Yankees beat the Indians for the ninth time in the last 11 meetings.

Nick Swisher had a two-run single during a three-run opening inning for the Indians, who have lost twice in this series.

Vinnie Pestano (0-1) delivered an 0-2 pitch that Ellsburgy turned on and drove over the wall in right with two outs.

Jason Kipnis singled with one out off David Robertson in the home 14th and then stole second. Asdrubal Cabrera struck out swinging and was barely thrown out at first on a ball that got away near home plate. Michael Brantley then sent a fly ball to deep left field that Zoilo Almonte made an over-the- shoulder grab to end the game.

Chase Whitley pitched two innings to get the win, while Robertson nailed down his 22nd save.

Both teams were unable to convert good scoring opportunities in the 10th inning, with the Indians failing to take advantage of three straight walks issued by New York’s David Huff that loaded the bases with one out. Shawn Kelley bailed Huff out of the jam, however, by coming up with a big strikeout of Swisher and getting David Murphy to ground to short.

The Yankees put the first two on in the top of the frame on a walk to Derek Jeter and a Brian McCann single, but Cleveland’s Cody Allen regrouped to retire the next three hitters.

Acquired from Arizona on Sunday for Vidal Nuno, Brandon McCarthy’s Yankee debut got off to a very rocky beginning, as the Indians quickly loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a Teixeira error in the bottom of the first. After a Lonnie Chisenhall grounder pushed home a run, Swisher brought in two more with a single up the middle to give Cleveland a 3-0 lead.

McCarthy settled down thereafter, however, and Teixeira closed the gap in the fourth by launching his first homer of the night — the first extra-base hit allowed by Tomlin to that point. The New York slugger connected again an inning later during a three-run fifth that briefly put the Yankees in front.

Ellsbury started the rally with a one-out double and Jeter followed with a single in front of McCann’s sacrifice fly. Teixeira then crushed Tomlin’s fastball well into the right-field seats for a 4-3 Yankees edge.

Cleveland responded in the bottom of the fifth via Carlos Santana’s two-out single that plated Asdrubal Cabrera, who had reached on an opposite-field double off McCarthy two batters previously.

Tomlin helped keep it a 4-4 game by setting down seven straight Yankees after Teixeira’s second homer.

Game Notes

McCarthy, who allowed nine hits over 6 2/3 innings, walked three batters or less for a 100th consecutive start, the longest active streak in the majors … Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner sat out the game with an abdominal strain … Before the contest, the Yankees placed staff ace Masahiro Tanaka on the 15-day disabled list due to an ailing right elbow … The Indians announced that Zach McAllister will be recalled from Triple-A Columbus to start Saturday’s game against the Chicago White Sox in place of the injured Justin Masterson … Tomlin gave up eight hits in seven frames.
