Djokovic gets top seed over Nadal at Wimbledon

Wimbledon, England ( – Wimbledon did things its way on Wednesday by installing former top-ranked star Novak Djokovic as its top seed above world No. 1 stalwart Rafael Nadal, while defending champion Andy Murray was seeded third ahead of seven-time champ Roger Federer.

The All England Club gave the top billing to Djokovic, the 2011 champion and 2013 runner-up, by using its controversial grass-court weighting system in deciding its seeds instead of going by the ATP World Tour rankings.

The French Open champion Nadal, the 2008 and 2010 Wimbledon titlist, will be the second seed after losing in the first round last year and second round 12 months earlier at the storied AEC.

Murray became Great Britain’s first men’s singles champion since Fred Perry in 1936 when he beat Djokovic in last year’s final and was elevated to the third seed despite his No. 5 world ranking.

The former world No. 1 Federer, who was a shocking second-round loser last year, is currently ranked fourth in the world and will be the fourth seed.

World No. 3 Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka, who has never advanced beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon, is seeded fifth.

Seeds six-through-10 are 2010 Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer, Milos Raonic, John Isner and Kei Nishikori.

The draw will be revealed Friday.
