Brewers score four in 13th, hand Mets another loss

(Thursday, June 12)

Final Score: Milwaukee 5, New York 1

Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Jonathan Lucroy’s go-ahead two-run homer in the 13th inning helped lift the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-1 win over the New York Mets in the finale of a three-game set.

Rickie Weeks, Aramis Ramirez and Mark Reynolds each drove in a run for the Brewers, who have won four of their last five. Zach Duke (4-0) pitched a flawless 12th inning to get the win.

Bobby Abreu knocked in the only run of the game for the Mets, who have lost eight of their last nine games. Carlos Torres (2-4) suffered the loss for allowing four runs in the 13th.

Neither starter factored into the decision despite both pitching well. Kyle Lohse went eight innings for the Brewers and gave up just an unearned run on four hits, while Jon Niese allowed a run on six hits over 7 2/3 innings for the Mets.

Ryan Braun led off the 13th with a single and Lucroy gave the Brewers the lead with a homer just inside the left field foul pole. Reynolds later drove in a run with a single, and Weeks was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a 5-1 lead.

“Believe me, I was trying to do it earlier than that. Sorry,” Lucroy said with a laugh.

Francisco Rodriguez set the Mets down quietly in the home half of the 13th to wrap up the win.

Ramirez’s home run in the second got the Brewers on the board, but the team left a runner on second in the fourth and fifth, and stranded a man on base in each of the next three innings as well.

The Mets tied the game in the fourth as Daniel Murphy led off with a single to center that saw him move to third as Carols Gomez misplayed the ball. Abreu followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

There was a very brief rain delay in the top of the 11th as the umps waved the players off the field with one out, but a brief huddle between the umps and the grounds crew saw them quickly resume play.

In the bottom of the 11th, New York loaded the bases with one out, but Wilmer Flores hit a grounder to first that saw a force out at home, and Anthony Recker looked at strike three to end the inning. Recker argued the call as he thought the pitch was low, and was tossed from the game by umpire Angel Hernandez.

“We don’t get blown out by anybody,” said Mets manager Terry Collins. “I don’t care where it is, I don’t care who we play. We just haven’t been able to come up with a hit when we needed a hit.

“This is a game where you’ve got to step up. This is what it’s about at this level. You’ve got to step up, you’ve got to make adjustments. We don’t feel sorry for ourselves.”

Milwaukee had two men on with one out in the 12th, but Scooter Gennett struck out as did Weeks to end the frame.

Game Notes

Niese has allowed three earned runs or less in 17 straight starts, the longest current streak in the majors … Gomez went 2-for-6 and has reached base safely in 27 straight games, the longest current streak in the majors. Second on that list is New York’s Curtis Granderson, who drew a pinch-hit intentional walk in the 11th inning to extend his run to 24 straight games … Milwaukee welcomes Cincinnati to town for three games beginning Friday … The Mets host the Padres for three games starting Friday.
