Beltran’s blast lifts Yanks over Orioles

(Friday, June 20)

Final Score: New York 5, Baltimore 3

Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Carlos Beltran’s two-out, three-run homer capped a furious ninth-inning rally that catapulted the New York Yankees to a 5-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

Trailing 3-1 and down to their final out, the Yankees rocked Baltimore closer Zach Britton (3-1) for four runs to pull out their fourth consecutive triumph, with Beltran following Brian McCann’s RBI single with a blast into the visiting bullpen to end a 2-for-4 night.

McCann and Brian Roberts also finished with two hits for New York. David Huff picked up the win despite being reached for an unearned run in the top of the ninth.

Steve Pearce went 2-for-5 with two RBI for Baltimore, with Adam Jones adding a run-scoring single in the setback.

Britton had set down two straight hitters after permitting a leadoff single to Brett Gardner in the Yankees’ half of the ninth, but couldn’t put away Mark Teixeira as the first baseman worked a walk in front of McCann’s base hit up the middle that cut Baltimore’s lead to 3-2.

The Orioles closer than fell behind to Beltran, who got all of a fastball on a 3-1 count to complete the comeback.

Beltran’s walk-off shot provided a jubilant ending for an otherwise frustrating night for New York’s offense, which stranded 11 runners and failed to score on three bases-loaded situations against Baltimore starter Ubaldo Jimenez earlier in the contest.

The Yankees did come through with an early run when Teixeira stroked a two-out double to right in the first inning that plated Jacoby Ellsbury, who reached on an infield hit prior to swiping second.

Jones kept it a 1-0 game an inning later, launching a perfect strike from center field to throw out Beltran at the plate after the veteran attempted to score on Gardner’s medium-range fly ball.

Baltimore, meanwhile, didn’t record a hit off Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda before pounding out four during a two-run sixth to forge ahead.

Nick Hundley thwarted Kuroda’s no-hit bid with a leadoff double to right- center field and Pearce drove him home with a two-bagger two batters later. Jones followed with a single to short right to bring in Pearce for a 2-1 edge.

Kuroda got through the sixth without further damage, surrendering just the four hits while logging six strikeouts.

Jimenez issued six walks over an eventful 5 2/3 innings, but still held the Yankees to only one run with defensive help from Jones and second baseman Ryan Flaherty, who made a nifty backhand stab on a hard smash from Gardner to get the O’s out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth.

Pearce singled off Huff in the ninth to score Jonathan Schoop, who had reached on a Yankee error and was pushed to second on a Hundley bunt, and extend Baltimore’s lead to 3-1.

Game Notes

The Orioles had been 33-2 when leading after eight innings this season … Roberts collected his 1,500th career hit, most of which came as a member of the Orioles, with a second-inning single … Teixeira’s RBI double extended his hitting streak to nine games … Jimenez is now winless in eight starts (four losses, four no-decisions) since besting Tampa Bay on May 8 … New York’s Kelly Johnson was limited to pinch-running duties after bruising his left hand Thursday against Toronto.
