Astros score 4 in the 7th to beat Yankees

(Wednesday, August 20)

Final Score: Houston 5, New York 2

Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Robbie Grossman broke a tie with a two-run single during a four-run seventh inning as the Houston Astros rallied for a 5-2 victory over the New York Yankees.

Jake Marisnick had an RBI single and scored in the decisive frame for Houston, which clinched its first-ever series win in the Bronx.

New York starter Michael Pineda’s outing ended after he walked Jason Castro to open the seventh. Esmil Rogers replaced David Huff (2-1) after a one-out single by Marwin Gonzalez and served up Marisnick’s bases-loaded hit that tied the game at 2-2.

Grossman then found the gap in right-center field and Jose Altuve singled home Marisnick.

Astros starter Scott Feldman (7-9) gave up two runs on eight hits, struck out seven and walked two before departing with two aboard and two outs in the seventh.

Both runners moved up on a passed ball, but Kevin Chapman struck out Jacoby Ellsbury swinging to end the inning.

Jose Veras allowed a pair to reach with two outs in the ninth, but he earned his first save of the season after Ellsbury flied out to right field.

Stephen Drew homered for the Yankees, who have dropped the first two of this three-game set and seven of nine overall. Pineda limited Houston to two runs on four hits and walked one.

“He was pretty good. I thought he got a little tired at the end, but that’s to be expected,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said about Pineda, who made his second start since coming off the disabled list. “We pushed him a little bit, but I thought he gave us a really good performance.”

After Pineda was perfect the first time through the order, Grossman singled to lead off the fourth. After advancing to second base on an Altuve sacrifice bunt, Grossman scored on a two-out double by Dexter Fowler.

Feldman stranded two runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings, but a two-out homer by Drew tied it at 1-1 in the fourth. The blast by Drew — his first as a Yankee — came after Chase Headley was thrown out trying to steal second.

New York grabbed the lead in the fifth when Ichiro Suzuki scored on Ellsbury’s two-out bunt.

Game Notes

Feldman held the Yankees scoreless for 6 2/3 innings on Opening Day … Pineda has allowed six hits or fewer in 14 consecutive starts … Houston finished 5- for-10 with runners in scoring position, while New York was 1-for-8 in such situations.
