Giants Cruzing Towards a Deal

Giant fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The Team announced that they are on the verge of finalizing a five year deal with stand-out wide receiver Victor Cruz. The contract will reportedly be worth $43mm over five years (or $8.6mm annually), which in effect locks Cruz up for six years considering the one year extension he recently inked. So in reality, Cruz will earn roughly $45.879mm over six years, or $7.64mm annually. Not too shabby for the once unknown wide-out from Massachusetts. Jay Glazer of FOX reported that approximately $15.6mm of the money is guaranteed, and will become fully guaranteed within the next three weeks.

The transaction allows the Giants to head into training camp free of what would have been a major distraction. And Cruz’ performance over the last two seasons support his worth. The 26-year-old playmaker led the Giants with 86 receptions for 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns this past season, ranking 15th in the league in receiving yards just one year after posting the NFL’s third highest mark. And he’s durable. Outside of a mid-season ending hamstring injury in 2010, Cruz has played in all 32 regular season games since 2011. Hopefully the new contract will ensure that QB Eli Manning and Cruz will be enjoying the same success – and more – for years to come.

In other news and what is becoming a trend of nearly epidemic proportions, yet another NFL player has been arrested, this time a NY Giant. Newly acquired LB Dan Connor was arrested at Philadelphia International Airport July 6th for carrying a switchblade knife. According to sources, Connor is being charged with possession of an offensive weapon after TSA authorities spotted the former Cowboy and Panther carrying the blade during a routine X-Ray baggage scan. Connor, who played his college ball at Penn State, is a former 2008 third round pick of Carolina where he played for four seasons until stopping in Dallas for a cup of coffee during the 2012 season. The 27 year old Linebacker signed with the Giants in March. Connor was released from jail Sunday on his own recognizance and is reportedly cooperating with authorities.
