Brooklyn, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Algieri took a split decision from Ruslan Provodnikov to win the WBO Super Lightweight title on Saturday night.
Despite being knocked down twice in the first round, Algieri (20-0) rallied to fight a good, technical fight and landed numerous punches against the Siberian native.
In the first round Provodnikov (23-3) landed a crushing left hook to the eye of Algieri, and the eye immediately started to swell up. A bit later, Algieri had to take a knee after getting hit again, but made it back up.
For the rest of the fight, neither boxers connected with many big punches, but Algieri was able to keep away from Provodnikov and landed numerous small shots.
After the final bell, Algieri won two scorecards 114-112, and lost the other 117-109.
In the undercard, Demetrius Andrade pounded Brian Rose to defend his WBO Superwelterweight title.
Andrade (21-0) had knocked down Rose (25-2) twice in the first three rounds, and had broken his nose.
With Andrade pounding Rose in the seventh round, the referee intervened and stopped the fight 1:19 in.
